Sustainability or Sustainable development is a multi-dimensional concept that has been defined by the Brundtland report as development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
Economy, Society and Environment are the three dimensions of sustainability which are also commonly referred to as People, Planet and Profit. Parallel consideration and intertwining of these three dimensions is important to bring sustainability into practice.
Even though we have made some progress in moving towards a sustainable world we are faced with a formidable challenge that will test our ingenuity and resolve. Recent scientific studies such as the one on planetary boundaries shows that our current growth and consumption patterns are unsustainable in the long run. It demonstrates that our society is exceeding the limits of available natural resources and is disturbing the earth’s ecological balance. It is high time that we adapt and become serious about bringing sustainability into practice.
